1. Sports mags in Spanish
As reported in SOL 63 [http://skipper.gseis.ucla.edu/students/bjensen/html/sol/issues/63.htm],
your friends in the American Media tabloid colossus have launched
a new soccer magazine, Acción Deportiva. With a US-published
entry in the mix, joining old favorites such as don balón
[http://www.donbalon.es/]
and Tiro de Esquina it's now easier for libraries to give
space on the periodical shelves to a subject wildly popular among
the Spanish-reading public. But those of you who've been at it a
while--what can you tell the rest of us about your take on Spanish-language
sports mags? Which have you found to be the most popular, and what
kinds of subscription hurdles have you had to jump? Please take
a moment to savor that sports metaphor before you reply.
2. An ever-more international National Pastime
Flaco, who worships the ground upon which the cleats
of boricua Edgar Martínez and venezolano Freddy García walk, is
happy to see Hispanic Online's new baseball column "Rounding
the Bases." It's the place to find weekly reports on the Latin
American members of all your favorite big-league teams. http://www.hispaniconline.com/sports&/sports/rnd_base/8_7_01.html
3. Why the Census Bureau can't be trusted
with Moises Alou's batting average
Sports fans care deeply about stats. The US Census
Bureau should hire more sports fans. Today's LA Times has
a report headlined, "Decline of Latino Groups in Census Has
Agencies Angry, Experts Puzzled." The 'decline,' you see, is
illusory, a newly recognized artifact of the flawed survey method.
Read all about it at http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-000064899aug10.story
where the article will be freely available till August 20.
From the text: "Local organizations say the
county's Salvadoran population at least doubled in the last decade,
but the census shows Salvadorans declining 26% from 253,086 in 1990
to 187,193 in 2000...The census delivered similar statistical blows
to a long list of local Latino subgroups. The county's large Guatemalan
community appeared to decrease by 20%, while its smaller Colombian
and Ecuadorean contingents purportedly dropped by 40% and 30%, respectively.
Logan estimates the Guatemalan population actually increased 89%
to more than 236,000."
(Alou leads the majors at .365, though the most
recent census figures have him batting a paltry .217, just behind
Joe Shlabotnick.)
4. Test-drive the ratón around the plaza--you'll
enjoy this one!

Subject: Saludos and Spanish-language mouse tutorial
Dear Bruce,
The last time we exchanged messages was a few months ago when I
told you that I was moving on from the Gates Foundation to begin
working at Technology Resource Foundation. A lot of exciting projects
are under development at TRF, and I am extremely pleased to let
you know of one.
I am writing you to share news of the imminent release of a Spanish-language
computer mouse tutorial that is self-guided, interactive, and computer-based.
Because SOListas are leaders in the provision of library services
to Hispanic and Latino populations, I would like to invite you to
test-drive the tutorial at:
http://www.trfoundation.org/projects/mousetutorial.html.
We welcome any thoughts and insights you might have after viewing
the tutorial. Currently we are collaborating with public libraries
and computer centers that serve Spanish-speaking clients to test
the beta version of the tutorial. With their usability feedback
we are hoping to refine this important tool for an anticipated release
of "A Mouse in the Plaza" version 1.0 in September.
I hope we get a chance to catch up again soon, but in the meantime
please take a few moments to look at the mouse tutorial and give
us some comments.
Sincerely,
Elenita

6. Book cards and pockets needed in Guatemala
They're not as valuable as old baseball cards, so
if you have any of these relics taking up space back in the Tech
Services room, Flaco knows of some little libraries in Guatemala
that could put them to very good use. Please contact me at flaco@sol-plus.net
and we'll work something out.

Subject: FW: X FERIA INTERNACIONAL DEL LIBRO DE CARACAS
Hi all,
Although this is in Spanish, I thought it might be of interest to
the list. It's a report on the Caracas International Bookfair, the
next one of which is scheduled for May to June 2002. I don't know
if any of you on the list have had the opportunity to attend the
Guadalajara Bookfair, for which ALA offers a free pass, hotel accommodations,
and partial airfare reimbursement. I would encourage you to participate
in the pass program. The deadline for all entries is August 15,
so there's still time!
If you're interested in books in Spanish from Latin America and
Spain, a Latin American bookfair is certainly a great way to go.
You get to see the works and talk with vendors; in addition, you
get to see how residents of those countries respond to authors,
literature, books, and the like. Bookfairs are often major cultural
events in Latin American countries, so
you really learn a lot by attending, about the booktrade but also
about important cultural touchstones.
Below is the information on the Caracas bookfair. Here is a link
to information on the ALA Guadalajara free pass program:

Take care,
John Barnett
ávidos compradores, a autores y expositores,
