These delightful rules from Mexico's first true public library, that of the Turriana Cathedral in Mexico City, were penned originally in Latin by don Manuel Martín and translated into Spanish by Dr. Atenógenes Santa María, evidently witty men. Most of these 19th-century admonitions still make sense today, but they may strike you and your patrons as sounding comically severe.
