2. Nadal Prize 2001
Since 1945 the Premio Nadal, Spain's oldest literary
award, has honored novelists of that nation. Last week the honors
went to Fernando Marías Franco for _El niño de los coroneles_,
described as "a globe-trotting detective story about tyrants...inspired
by the regime of the late Romanian despot Nicolae Ceaucescu."

3. Arte Público Press introduces book award
More than 1,000 entries came in, and this month
Arte Público Press promises to announce the first winner of its
"Reading with Energy" Hispanic Children's Book Award aimed
to address "the need for more culturally relevant bilingual
reading materials for Hispanic children." The story's
